Program Format:

The naturalist from West Bloomfield Parks and Recreation will visit with different species of animals. Prior to introducing the students to these animals, pictures and diagrams will be used to illustrate different body language. Students will be asked how to engage/approach people who are acting shy, nervous, angry or outgoing. Connections will be made with each animal as students are instructed to conclude for themselves which emotion an individual animal is exhibiting. Students will be instructed to adjust their own behavior accordingly. For example, a Box Turtle by nature is very shy and will always hide in its shell when it feels nervous, threatened or afraid. When presented with the Box Turtle students will need to adjust their own behavior to be quiet and patient if they want to draw the turtle out of its shell. A Painted Turtle, Eastern Screech Owl and domestic rabbit will also be used during the program.

This is a learning through observation program and since the majority of animals visiting the classroom are from the wild they will not be handled by the students.
